I’m pretty much a live and let live type of person, love who you love and be who you are. Be kind, be courteous, be respectful. And if it isn’t any of your business, let it be. The current political climate in the United States is off, to put it nicely. With that in mind, I wanted to come up with a song that was Pride related, and in general that tends to fall in a “dance” groove.

I wasn’t trying to get deeply philosophical or autobiographical. My story is fairly standard. I grew up in a time when existing social norms dictated that being Gay meant something was wrong with me. Religions had lots to say on the topic. That fact is pretty much why I have little use for religion. I didn’t want to be Gay and never chose to be. But I did manage to convince myself the issue was that I hadn’t met the right person of the opposite sex. I had crushes here and there. Mine I think were more about the person than sex. Maybe not. Kinsey postulated that sexuality is somewhat fluid and at different points in life who we are sexual attracted to can change. Like just about any adolescent male, I just wanted sex. Whatever the case I’ve come to terms with who I am and those who have a problem can take it elsewhere. To be cliche, it is their problem, not mine.

I didn’t want the song to be a deep dive into my struggle, instead I wanted it to be on point, but still broad enough that just about everyone could relate. I had desires I didn’t understand, learned to hide them and lived a lie. I figured it out and went forward. That really is the crux of the song, but for I and every other mariginalized person, that is a big crux.

Writing the lyrics went pretty quick, but getting the music right took some patience and perseverance. I use Suno to generate music. Dispite what many think, it isn’t as simple as typing a generic prompt and instantly getting song. Well, you can do that, but it is not how I produce songs. I wanted this one to be a dance track, and getting it to stay true to the lyrics and still be groovin’ or whatever the current terminology is.

Just Me is not the only Gay themed song I’ve written. Fire and Rainbows is a story about two guys meeting and falling in love. The central theme is love, it just happens to be two guys or it could be two gals. It could be a guy and a gal. Gender isn’t mentioned in the song, so interprete it however you like.

I Want to Be is one that could be Gay themed.. That song is about personal development in general. But it could also reflect the struggles of non-heterosexuals or anyone else who wanted to be more.

If I were going to state a single overiding theme it would be acceptance. Of oneself, of others. Different isn’t a bad thing, unless it is a difference based on harming or denying the rights of others. Those differences we can all live without.
