New Direction – Maybe

It has been over 2 months since I started working with AI. Honestly it has been one of the most creatively productive periods in my life. I’ve released 2 music albums, one of which is Christmas themed album. The other album, Rebellion of Conscience, is a semi autobiographical collection of songs sung by the same AI voice. Then there is the single, Working Man, a country rock nod to the people who labor day in and day out with little acknowledgement. On top of that I produced 6 music videos. I have 2 more albums of New Age style tracks waiting to be released. The Christmas album, Christmas Keepsakes and the single Working Man are available on Apple Music and Spotify. Rebellion of Conscience is available at justinvail.bandcamp.com

It is amazing to me that I started with AI as a means to garner attention to my novel by producing a feature length film adaptation. AI video is powerful and can be used in a lot of ways. But it is not ready for a feature length film. Not yet. I think it will happen, but character consistency and lip syncing still have a ways to go.

I’m not quite ready to abandon photography and painting, but I think my days of chasing galleries and shows is over. I’ll keep this site, post my new work and that will probably be it. At least I think so. This is not the first time I’ve considered artistic redirection.

There is a certain thrill to working with a new medium, particularily one that produces results right from the starting gate. My first complete AI short film called Seasons is I still think a really good work. I could see myself in a few months, giving it a once over and re-releasing. The concept is solid and I think the music and sound effects are as good as they can be. Some of my video transitions could use some help and some of the clips themselves I can see improving. Why, well there are AI film festivals and short form is the norm there. Would I win, maybe. I’ve seen some astounding work in just the few months I’ve been working with AI video.

I still very much consider myself a hobbiest with AI. I’m not making any money, not yet. With YouTube I’m sitting at the edge of monetizing. Even then I still have a ways to go before my use of AI pays for itself. There is the potential that a music track could take off. I’m not holding my breath, but I think I did a good job of putting those albums together. Finding an audience is another matter.

I’ll never abandon photography or painting. I would still like to see my work in a major gallery. As I’ve gotten older I realize that may not ever happen and I’m ok with that. I put myself out there, I did and will continue to do some really good work. I still maintain that for every successful artist there are a thousand more, more talented who haven’t been discovered. I’m content with that. In the meantime, AI has captured my attention.
