Specialization

We love labels. They enable us to sort things and put them neatly into a box so that we can make sense of the myriads of people, things, and places we come in contact with every day. We Americans go even further by identifying ourselves by our profession.

Artists are classified by the medium they work in. Sculpture, painting, photographer, and so on. Photographers more so than any other medium are considered to be a specialist in a particular subject matter. Wildlife, landscape, abstract, or portrait, whatever subject you can think of. The big three are I think wildlife, landscape, and portrait. If asked, I will say I’m an abstract photographer.

Truth is, I’m all over the place. A few weeks ago, I was shooting rust for an abstract piece, last week I was shooting the roses on my patio and this morning I was working on an abstract composite. I have and probably will again shoot wildlife as opportunity presents. I can see myself shooting dudoir again. We’re talking about another tour of western parks in the United States later this year. I’m sure a landscape or two will come from that trip and maybe some wildlife.
