Expressionism or Abstract Expressionism

Organic shape in red tones surrounded by darker and lighter red tones.

By all rights, I’m a contemporary artist. Meaning I’m living and working now. As both a painter and a photographer I lean towards abstract, and within that realm I think I fall mostly in the expressionism and abstract expressionism realm. If you are not familiar with the different art movements, it just means that color and form are more important than realistic representation. I might be showing you something that exists in the physical world, but to express emotions, I’ll distort that shape and rely on color to set the emotional tone. When I slip into pure abstract expressionism it is all about the emotion of the moment and how it is expressed in brush stroke and color.

Red might indicate passion or anger, blue – sadness and disassociation, green – growth, and so on. Everyone will interpret the emotional meaning of a color a little differently. And, I ascribe to the idea that every interpretation is valid regardless of what I intend. Everyone will view a piece of art through their own internal filters. If one of my photographs or paintings speak to someone, I consider it mission accomplished.

All of which brings me to Organic Interlude #1. It is an older piece that I’ve recently revisited. Being a digital painting, I was able to reorient it, crop and add a view more details. I’ve always liked the piece but like it even more in the updated form.

With this offering I’m also re-introducing my one of one concept. This is a digital painting, so every print, is well a print. The original if you will is a computer file and that is not for sale. Well, maybe, but you’d need very, very deep pockets. Since the art world most values the original, one of one is as close as I can get with digital paintings. What it means is that this will be the only print that I will physically sign. If I offer additional prints later on, they will only have a digital copy of my signature.

And if you are wondering, the main form is a bean, distorted and stylized. The piece is called #1 because I have ideas for additional pieces, again starting with an organic food shape and letting myself run wild with it.
